Petrol Lawnmowers...

So, the sun is shining and I deide to cut the grass, get the mower out and give the string (excuse my ignorance) a good pull to get the engine started, and then the string breaks and retracts itself back into the engine. What do I do now, can these be replaced, if so how are they attached to the mower / engine and where can I get a replacement from...? cheers ck1 (Mon 10:32 13/Jun/05)

This can be a daunting task... but it can be done if you are careful.  The entire device, if mounted on the top of the engine, consists of a wheel with the rope attached, but most importantly, a coil spring to retract the rope once it's pulled.  After locating the screws that hold the device on and after loosening them, be sure to hold the device securely while removing to prevent the spring from, well, sproiiiinging, so to speak.  After replacing the rope, and rewinding it, carefully replace the entire device back on the engine. Check here for one model of engine

It's a good idea to make sure any On/Off switch for the engine is securely off to prevent any inadvertent starting while you're working with it...  Good Luck!
