it is either *#100# or #*100* cant remember which way round it is

Ask someone you have called recently to look in received calls and tell you the number.

Your phone can't read the number on its own. You have to make a (free) call to the service provider to get the number displayed on your phone. As Katiecarol indicates, the number you call for Vodafone is *#100#

However other providers may have different numbers. We need to know which phone company issued the sim card.
