I need to change a fitting to a lamp but the instructions do not tell me where to place the three coloured wires. The old fitting had 3 clear areas for the wires but this new fitting only has two! What colour goes where?
A plastic bulb holder only needs two wires - the brown and the blue. And it doesn't matter which way round they're connected. The earth wire - green and yellow, can be cut back. It's a metal bulb holder that must be earthed by connecting the green and yellow wire to the holder's outer casing. No need to go back to Homebase.
I wouldn't recommend using the 2 wire lampholder if the lamp the lampholder is attached to has a metal body. If you cut back the green/yellow earth wire you could end up with no earth at all on the lamp. The lamp could then become live in the event of a fault.
Thank-you all! I've gone with a metal fitting as was previously on it. Old_ Geezer, PLEASE stay away from all this new fangled "electrocity" stuff, I fear for your safety!!
