It's a Samsung digital and I've changed the batteries in the remote and it still won't work. Does that mean there is something wrong within the tele itself? I can't be doing with this getting up and down every time I want to change channel, too much like exercise for me. So any sensible (or not) suggestions welcome. Thanks.

Have you a webcam or video cam?
Stick it on, face the remote at it and look for a light coming from the emitter bulb (the little light or window on remote)
If you see a light, it's likely to be ok.
If not, the remote needs replacing or the battery connections could be iffy .. (look at the battery connection terminals in remote)
I take it it's not a 'one-for-all' or aftermarket typre remote, and is original TV one?
check you have put the batteries in the right way ie + -

are the batteries any good , try batteries from another item
you may need to reprogramme it to 'speak' to the tv beacsue the batteries were out for more that a certain length of time ...
*because oops
could be a stuck button - buttons downwards, lightly bang the remote on a hard surface to see if it frees anything.

failing that, you can buy new remotes online specific for your tv, and not just from the manufacturer. I got one once for a ten year old tv

Albags I don't have a web or video cam. The remote is the original one that came with the tele. I am going to take the remote batteries out again and clean the terminals and make sure they're in the right way.
I thought that exercise was good for you, ladybirder?

Maybe this is a blessing in disguise?

JB12 I never like anything that's good for me I'm afraid.
Anyway, I am a Plonker, I am a Plonker, I am a Plonker X 100.
I carried the remote over to a lamp so I could see better and guess what...... you're right, I had put the batteries in the wrong way round. Humble apologies for wasting the time of all you good people who took the trouble to answer. It's working fine now - what a relief I'm exhausted:-(
Happens to others of us from time to time, too... or even putting the cover on and forgetting to put the batteries in at all, LOL.

I haven't done that yet boxy but no doubt my time will come.
I have Virgin Media via cable and they replace remotes when they go wrong. A very good service, but I have got the whole package from them so no doubt I pay for it in the long run.
My God, I have seen everything now!

Someone who is happy with the service from Virgin Media.

I don't use them myself, but have seen and hard so many complints about them.
