Woodchip wallpaper

Two questions

1. The best, quickest and easiest way to remove this devils loo roll from a wall

2. WHAT was the idea of it in the first place? Was it just for some definition and pattern from plain wallpaper?!

Cheers!

When we moved into this lovely house 22 years ago, the hall stairs & landing was adorned with 'orange' painted woodchip wallpaper. Removing it was one of the first jobs we 'had' to do!

However, it was much harder than we'd anticipated. So four of us scored the walls with stanley knives, then steamed & soaked a section at a time, scraping away until it all came off.

Good luck, you'll certainly need it!

I used a steamer. I tell you this machines a god send when it comes to woodchip paper.

I think at one time woodchip was fashionable at the time. (I don't know how as the stuff's horrible).

Be very careful trying to remove the paper - it can hide a multitude of sins. I know all the makeover programmes will no longer remove this as they have had som many problems in the past. You may end up replastering (expensive).

Whilst in Homebase the other day, I notice that they are now selling some Anaglypta (or similar) that is deisgned to go over woodchip. If I had woodchip still in the house, i would certainly do this!

That's a good word of warning Oneeyedvic, but fortunately for us, the walls were sound & without any cracks, etc. It was just shear hard work! Cheers :0)

Now artex is another story!

We had all the artex on the ceilings removed & put back to how they originally were - nice & smooth!

Thankfully, the previous owners hadn't removed the coving or the picture rails, so once it was all finished, it looked brilliant.

Definitely use a steamer. As has been suggested you may see a few interesting, unknown features appearing.

I am quite convinced that m last house was held together by the stuff ! But then it had been through two World Wars !
