Carpeting over existing carpet

The carpet on one of our bedrooms is quite thin. Is it possible to put a new carpet down over it, allowing the thinner carpet to act like an underlay?

ive done this in the past, just ensure your doors can close with the new carpet.

Thanks for the replies folks, I think we'll give it a go. It's only a small box room and the door shouldn't be an issue as there is a good gap between it and the existing carpet and once I get the furniture back in there'll be no chance of it sliding! Thanks again.
