Washing Powder - poor results

Just lately I'm finding clothes washed using various brands of powder are coming out of the machine with white marks on them. This is not undisssolved powder and no fabric conditioner has been used. I have spoken to a friend who has been experiencing much the same problem. I'm going to switch to liquid detergent and see if that changes things, but has anyone else had similar problems of late when using powders?

No....but it might be an idea to run your machine on a hot empty hot wash a few times. Could be a build up in the pipes.

Do you wash your clothes hot enough ?

I always put my machine on an extra rinse and spin after each wash. Also it could be you have too many clothes in machine.

There was a thread about this only a few days back, it was suggested that the problem is the fillers which bulk up the washing powder. I'l try to find it.

Actually 4getmenot we are on a water meter and bloody costly it is. I save though by bathing once a week in the water butt thats attached to the shed. I do this under cover of darkness with Mr. Den holding a touch - not sure why my neighbour has bought a pair of night vision binoculars }:0 (

I hope mr den then has the 2nd bath in it. but no torch is needed that is a waste of energy. bathe by the moonlight.

Nooooo - not using the same water butt - every fortnight I throw him in the fish pond.

I'm using a spanish WM at present, but can't see a vast difference between that and its foreign counterparts. I always use fabric conditioner and opt for "aclarado intensivo" which is like an "intensive rinse" at the end of each programme. I tend to use a "prelavado" or prewash when washing towels and using stain removes as well as ordinary detergent, and would always recommend a liquid detergent in place of powder.

Also, instead of using boil washes, I tend to use sterilizing tablets, which I place straight into the drum.

Newer washing machines are made to European Energy Efficiency standards. So by using less water in rinses, manufacturers can claim a higher efficiency level. Unfortunately, the EU standards don't include the efficiency of rinses. ''Which'' magazine test reports state that the majority of new machines don't rinse properly. Den's advice about a second rinse cycle is probably the answer.

I have a cold water fill machine and have found if i overload the machine with clothes it leaves powder residue on the washing. I switched to the liquid some months ago.
Never had this problem with a hot and cold water fill machine that i had some years ago.

Sorry for not saying "thanks" to all until now. Not had chance to get on PC! Have tried extra rinse and spin before, but still had staining. I do occasionally run the machine empty on a hot "maintenance" wash - as per machine's instruction book, to flush out any undisolved powder. Interesting to hear how much of the contents is a bulking agent! Money for old rope! Interestingly last week I saw a TV prog which found that powders outperform liquids. Cheers and thanks again
