how can you tell the diffrence between gold and brass?

i have found a small ornament in a very old building and it looks like gold but cant be sure its not brass
i know that with brass it sometimes tarnishes and can turn green, but this has not which makes me think it could be gold...it is a small mouse with amazing detail

Rub the item briskly between your fingers or palms. If it's brass it will leave a definitive odor... hard to describe, but gold will not leave any odor...
