I have two trees that I can't identify but every couple of years they release a white fluffy substance that floats everywhere and looks like a blizzard. They also release hundreds of seed pods. I have pruned them right down in the past but they grow quite quickly. Can anybody advise me how I can prevent this without getting rid of the trees

Poplars can grow VERY tall!
Yes, they're poplars and they grow quickly and as Tallulah says, very tall, unfortunately you can't stop them from growing.

Thanks folks.
So there is no way to prevent all the mess?
If you keep pruning them in the spring you might. You could ask at an arboretum for advice
Careful with poplars. There are lines of them at the bottom of my garden. Their roots spread a long way and can cause dessication of the soil (especially clay) and lead to building subsidence. They grow very quickly and need pollarding every few years.
