Hi there
can anyone tell me which Eucalyptus Tree is hardy enough to grow in the UK. I live in the North East of England by the way.
Also I do understand that they are fast growing and best started from seed. Fast growing is good for me but I dont know the best place to buy the seeds.
Any help much appreciated.
cheers,
Bill McC

:)
Eucalyptus Gunnii is hardy. they can also be pruned back each year to grow as a bush, thus giving you attractive foliage. A seed supplier - Chiltern Seeds of Ulverstone.
Most garden centres sell plants which are not too expensive. Hope this is of help.
Hi Bill, I have a gunnii too (Derbyshire) which has only suffered once on the NE side when we had a winter of very cold dry winds...it's cost me a fortune in pruning bills over the years by the way but I do love having an evergreen tree!
Actually, being older and (not necessarily) wiser, I wish I'd chosen one of the snow gums for their striking bark.

Lots of seeds here

where in the north east are you beam

Thanks Brom and Rob, Gunni it is then. I'll check those sites
Danchip I live in sunny Whitley Bay
I had a Gunnii in my garden and it was huge - it blew down in a gale and the tree surgeon who came to cut it up for me told me that they like other trees round them to give them some support and protection from gales. I didn't replace it though as my garden isn't big enough for a whole forest of trees. :)
beam im from sunny North Shields

In recent gales my 2 eucalyptus trees bent almost double with the wind and there's not one bit of damage, i was sitting watching them convinced they were going to snap

Thats it then. if they can survive North Shields then theyre the ones for me. :)
