How to wash fat out of clothes

Hi, I've carelessly managed to spill hot fat on my jumper today, it's splashed it several places. The label says wash on 40 with two lines underneath it's 100% cotton. Should I wash in cold water first ?how do I get the stains out?I know I should know this but don't, please help as it's a fave sweater.
thanks much

the two lines underneath mean wash it on the gentle cycle in the machine. i don't think it would do any good to wash it in cold water first, cold water won't life the fat. i'd spray it with some pre-wash spray immediately before putting it in the washing machine on the cycle you normally use. and if it doesn't come out, repeat the process until it does. i find that pre-wash spray pretty good for getting stains out.
Before you put it in the washing machine, rub some neat fairy or other washing up liquid into each of the splashes and leave for an hour or two

Wash it as normal following the washing instructions, as long as it hasn't been left too long it should wash out and leave no trace!
