How to keep cats off garden?

I have a persistant intruder in my garden who sits under a bush and tries(sometimes succesfully) to catch the birds visiting my bird table. I've tried all sorts, smelly plants, prickly plants and an electronic cat scarer.I'm the only one who can actually hear the cat scarer the cat curls up opposite it. Any more ideas please? janeR (Mon 12:31 13/Sep/04)

We had the same problem until we planted a load of wooden cocktail sticks in the areas that the cats tried to hide. (Make sure they're wooden - plastic ones will a) look rubbish & b) never rot. Only thing is you'll have to top up your cocktail-stick patch occasionally.) Don't worry - they don't hurt the cats, they simply avoid that area. It's never stopped the cats coming into our garden completely but now they're forced out into the open where the birds can easily see them. We've not had one feathered fatality since. Word of caution though - DO NOT use this solution if you are likely to ever have young children playing in the garden. While cats are smart enough to avoid the area, if a child fell on sharp cocktail sticks it would be very painful.

A little less drastic is to sprinkle mothballs - available from most hardware stores - round the base of the table. The whiff of camphor should offend the cat's delicate nose, and keep him away.

Here's a good one, ask your nearest zoo for some lion manure ( posh word for poo ) and put that on your garden. The cat will recognise the smell as a BIG threat and as a bonus your flowers will grow really well!

We have put 'Prikkastrip' round the tops of our fences. The cats soon learn not to jump on them to get in the garden! Failing that, how about one of those supersoaker water pistols, or even better a 12 bore!!

I use one of those small plastic pistols that fires(harmless) yellow plastic balls. Fun for you and no lasting damage to Tiddles!

Depending how large this bush is.Why don't you get yourself some wire mesh and stick under the bush so the cat can't sit under it.
