Cream carpet always gets dirty by skirting boards

We have cream carpeting throughout and I've noticed that immediately at the base of all the skirting boards a dirty black line appears where the carpet tucks into the floor. I vacuum weekly and damp-wipe the dust off the skirting boards so does anybody know how I can remove these dirty lines and prevent them from reappearing? 1001 carpet cleaner doesn't appear to really clean them up.

Most times there is a gap between the base of the skirting and the floor, you may not see this due to the carpet being down, this gap leads to a cavity behind the walls where air flows but also with the air dust, over the years when i have had new carpet laid i have filled the gap all round with filler, in turn stopping the dust coming through, this won't help now, but mybe bear in mind when having new carpet

As per cleversod, but the explanation is due to the generous amount of vauuming you are doing. Because of this gap, grubby dusty air is being sucked through the bottom of the skirting board into your carpet when you put the sucker into the corner like this.

With road tax hikes hitting those with 2001-2006 registered cars, would you consider selling up and buying a pre-2001 model to escape the the tax mans wrath?
