Laws realy depend on your local council and their byelaws. Generally, there are no restrictions covering bonfires unless they become a nuiscence, and then environmental health get involved.

Most local councils will have a website and it will often tell you on there...or give them a quick ring.

Bonfire ash is superb for the garden.
I just love having bonfires, but I always leave lighting them until after dusk, as I want to stay friends with my neighbours!
A warning though, they can get addictive.
Keep to some obvious rules:

1. Make sure the wind is blowing away from your neighbours.
2. Don't start them at weekends when neighbours are enjoying their gardens
3. don't burn anything that is wet
4. don't burn obnoxious substances
5. don't burn when the neighbours have washing on the line

As the rules occur most of the time why not take it down to the local council tip where it is free to dispose of.
Bonfire and wood ash provides excellent potash for the garden to streghthen the plants, but don`t let it get wet or the potash will leach into the soil before you want to use it. I keep it in a dry place for a while.
Yes most of all Do not light during a sunny day when the neighbours have their washing out - unlike my neighbour did with me.
