Central Heating economics

Hello all,
I am treasurer for a church and have been advised by a member that it would be more economic to keep the boiler running at low all the time and turn it up some time before a service as 'keep warm is cheaper than make warm'.
What are your thoughts bearing in mind the ancient timbers and presence of books and furnishings, please?

The first question that I ask, what is the insulation like?

If you have a drafty church it will cost quite a bit to keep it warmish as the boiler would be constantly on all the time. The only way is to do a check on power consumption for a week with the boiler on and a week with the boiler on as required. Take a gas reading before and after each test.

Thanks for your comments, a building has been on the site since 550AD and we've done what draughtproofing we can, following extensive work after a fire. Double-glazing stained glass windows is a no-no. The architect first suggested it.
I'll put it to t'committee and start a trial.
