I have a sticky residue of glue left on untreated oak. How do I remove it without causing further problems - it is yet to be treated with hard wax oil

Try baby oil. It certainly won't do any harm and usually works.

We've now removed it with a combination of heat, sawdust, scraping, and sandpapering!
always use wd40!
If it is something you don't want to get oil on - just put some alcohol on a cloth and rub it until it breaks down and comes off. If it is something that won't be harmed by oil - just cover it with olive oil overnight and it will wash right off - I am not sure if it will work with regular cooking oil, but it just might do it too.
