Cleaning tarnished silver necklace

23:14 on Mon 18/Sep/06 I have a silver necklace which cost me 50 (apparently it's 'Italian silver') and is about a year old. It has become tarnished to black over most of its surface.

Have I been conned? Is there an effective way of cleaning it or would a jeweller do it for me? I don't want to wear it until it is back to its former shine. And I don't want to spend hours steeped in vinegar, scrubbing and muttering old wives' incantations!

Thank you,
Ashdown.

(23:53 on Mon 18/Sep/06) Silver tarnishes easily, but the tarnish is easily removed using proprietary silver cleaning solutions, such as Goddard's Silver Dip.

(16:09 on Tue 19/Sep/06) put some kitchen foil in a bowl of hot water add some water softener tablets and some salt ,add your necklace and leave for several minutes .It works a treat.

(13:26 on Thu 21/Sep/06) Toothpaste? Works on my silver. I don't keep mine in a case (jewellery) so it does tarnish quite quickly. I clean fine chains too - get some toothpaste on my finger and thumb and run the chain through, then rinse.
