They dont like being pruned, if you have it in a bright sunny position it should stay compact and not require any pruning. Good Luck.

In Australia Bottlebrushes are pruned after they have flowered ,this keeps them more compact and tidy and encourages more flowers .I don't know about them in the UK but I'd ask at your local nursery .
