Can anyone tell me please, which are the best gutter guards - the rigid plastic ones that clip into place, or the gutter hedgedhogs which I think you have to tie in place? I have a gutter that fills with moss from the roof, rather than leaves.

Clip-in gutter screens are simple to install. I think I would go for them....

I would like to recommend you a fine-mesh product that can be installed easily under the shingles, or with the back bent up. Moreover, it can be fastened in order to add strength to the gutter. The tiny spaces in this gutter guard would not allow dirt particles to come over it and block the flow of water to the gutter. You can better detail at https://waterhawkgutters.com/
