indoors, as late as possible.
....by Boxing Day it will be shedding its needles.
I'm sorry. My previous answer was not terribly helpful. Just my first reaction to living Christmas Trees.

Buy it as late as you can possibly manage and try to keep it in the coolest area of the room. Water frequently but sparingly.
oh and get a nordmann, they really do shed less
Going off at a slight tangent from your question, I have a miniature Christmas tree which I bring in from the garden year after year. As far as I recall, I bought it from Waitrose for about £3.99, several years ago.
It has the Latin name of Chamaecyparis thyoides or simply white cypress / cedar.
They are only about a foot high and make an ideal centerpiece for a table. The pot they come in has no hole in the bottom and it will live for only a few weeks before drowning, this is easilly remided by transplanting it in a (slightly bigger) pot of your own.
I've just brought mine into the house to day, and its only a few inches taller than it was, several years ago. potted on into larger pots, about every 2nd year.
Chip, does it not have ants and other insects in the soil?
Not as far as I'm aware Tilly.
I use fresh compost every time.
