Oven Smell?

My new flatmate has complained of a burnt oil smell coming into his room when the oven is on. His room is next to the kitchen and he thinks the smell could be coming through the gap under his door- there is a big gap on the old door. However, no smoke or smell seems to be coming from the front of the oven even when I open it. I'm not convinced it is coming out and round into his room. Could it be that it is in some way going through the wall the oven is against and his room is the other side? I don't know enough about the workings of ovens! He says the smell is burnt oil that makes your throat prickle and eyes water, so obviously I need to get it sorted!
