Mr Cuppa had a Haemorrhage recently, and lots of blood spots on the carpet.

Plenty elsewhere too, but in or on washable fabrics..

I am waiting for the insurance assessor to come in a few days but not sure yet what they will suggest.

If it just means they want to try cleaning the carpet, then I won't go down that route as I have a largish excess to pay.

Any suggestions what to clean it with, that will get all the blood stains out. I did try with some Vanish spray I had but made it worse. Once it was wet it spread into rust coloured blobs.

Just putting up a link for you. Scroll down to the carpet one. Husband accidentally trod car oil onto a brand new carpet, and a tiny amount of neat fairy liquid did the trick. Good luck! http://www.goodhousekeeping.com/home/cleaning/tips/a16073/remove-blood-stains/
Many people swear by the efficacy of Rug Doctor machines and their website says that their Urine Eliminator is also fully effective on dried blood:

You can hire the machines from larger Tesco, Asda and Morrison's stores, among other places:
