In the loft of my house there is a small water tank each and every morning say about 2oc there is a continuous drip of water leaving the house through a over flow pipe, the only way to stop it is to turn on the hot water tap on in the bathroom,i have noticed there is a copper pipe about 6 inches from water line in the tank, this copper pipe leads down to the emersion tank.
could any one please tell me what the problem is and how to fix it.
many thanks in advance.

That tank feeds the hot tank, which is why running some hot water stops it for a while. Try having a shower and doing the washing up last thing before you go to sleep, until you can get it fixed. That should delay the time it starts dripping.

The ball cock in the tank is not closing properly as the tank fills up - probably a perished washer. Absolutely no problem for a plumber to fix.

Yes, the ballcock is not shutting off - it could be something easy like scale build up - I always think the easiest and quickest way to solve it is to replace it.

It's a simple DIY job but a Plumber would sort it out in no time.

My ballcock used to jam open sometimes when we had the tank in the roof (limescale buildup usually, due to our very hard water), I found a very gentle bend of the arm holding the ball would often fix it. :-)
