I got two hibiscus trees/plants a month ago and potted them in pots of soil. Some buds have appeared at the tips of the branches. However, the last few days I have noticed that some leaves have turned yellow and fall off at a touch. Is it dead?

probably not. Some plants do get "shocked" when they are repotted and will shed leaves or buds. Overwatering can also cause yellowing and shedding of leaves, make sure the pot drainage is good. If you scratch the bark of the main stem (very small scratch) nearish to the root and there is green underneath, the plant is alive.
