New plaster: PVA, watery emulsion or what?

I have replastered a largish section of wall and while feeling reasonably chuffed that it looks quite normal - in a low light anyway - I know I will need to seal it to redecorate over. So, should this be with PVA or emulsion - DIY forums seem to have endless debates so I'd simply be interested in what ABers have done, that works.

We've always just used watered down emulsion, lord konws if that's the best thing though, it's certainly the cheapest.

If you intend applying wallpaper apply a thin mix of wallpaper paste to seal the plaster and allow the paper to be "slid" into position. Mixing details will be on the paste packet. If you intend emulsioning the wall follow rocky's advice.

Both my kitchen and hall/stairs/landing I painted the plaster just like I would any other wall. No problems.

I've used both dilute PVA and dilute emulsion, and I cannot see any difference tbh.

Yes a thinned coat of emulsion. Never use PVA as it may cause some problems. Below is a copy of an e-mail from Dulux on this issue, it was sent to someone on another site a few years ago.



This e-mail was received from Dulux about putting PVA in with the first coat of emulsion or applying to walls as a mist coat.

Thank you for your E-mail I can categorically confirm we DON'T recommend using PVA to seal new or bare plaster. This is because the PVA will seal any residual moisture on the plaster and may cause bubbling when it dries. This is also stated in the BS 6150 and our ICI site work instruction.
