Flies in plant?

I ad some unsuccessful bulbs planted in a small pot in the kitchen. They died, I think and when I picked up the pot to throw it away, lots of tiny flies were on the soil. Yuck! Any idea why this happened? I tried watering the plant, not watering etc but they just didn't grow more than a shoot. I'm keen to not have flies in the kitchen again!

what bulbs were they and when did you plant them? The flies were probably sciarid flies which appear on wet compost especially on pots indoors. Normally due to over watering or rotting bulbs in the soil. I doubt they were the cause of the death of the bulbs.
agree with hawk, sounds like overwatering.
get a venus fly trap, I have just bought one for my blokes dad for fathers day and I cant help teasing it. They are amazing.

Thanks! Over-watering sounds about right. They were in a tiny ceramic gift pot, not a proper pot so probably did get too much water!
