Pour some warm water down the side of the bottle, the part of the bottle above the liquid gas level will stay warm longer than the part cooled by the liquid gas. Alternatively you could weigh it and subtract the weight of the bottle.

i have a 'gas bottle level indicator' on mine, they are magnetic and stick to the side of the gas bottle and you can see how much is left. they are a few pounds on ebay.

I've just hunted through my recycling bin, to find the catalogue which dropped out of this week's Radio Times:

Search on 'Gas level indicator' on ebay and they start at about £2 odd.

It looks as if it works on the principle that the liquid gas is cooler than ambient when it is being used. You could just use your hand to feel the point where there is a difference in temperature.

Cheers peeps. I went on Ebay and did a search for "gas level detectors" and it came up with gadgets for detecting gas leaks ..... "indicator" was the word I needed, not "detector" lol ...... *slaps head* ......

Weigh it , all gas canisters tell you the number of Kilos of gas in them when full . You need an empty canister to get the empty weight, then if the empty weight is 5 kg and it contained 13kg gas full the total full weight is 18Kg . If for example yours weighs 10Kg then there is 5Kg of gas left.
Most canisters also have the 'Tare' weight on them this is the weight empty so as long as yours shows the 'Tare' weight all you need to do is weigh it .Bathroom scales are accurate enough for this . Just deduct the Tare weight from the total weight and that is the weight of gas left. |

Here in the U.S. a screw on pressure guage is available for abou $10.00. It simply, as the name implies, screws onto the bottle with a threaded end for the burner hose to screw on. Works well and is quite accurate.
We have the same device already built into larger bottles (500 gallon). It is red and green color coded but has a needle that indicates volume remaining as well... |

How many others remember the early days of Calor Gas? Distributors would weigh the returned cylinders and give a discount towards a new one for any unused gas!

The pressure in a liquid gas bottle does not give any indication of the amount of liquid gas in the bottle. All it tells you(indirectly) is the temperature oof the liquid gas.
