My washing machine leaked a few weeks ago, and has caused water markes on the wall. It is now dry and I need to paint. Is there anyting I should do before painting to ensure the stain does not show through. The walls are white by the way TIA

Apply a coat of white gloss paint to the stained area.
When that's dry, apply a coat of white emulsion.
That should do the trick. If you're not happy with it, apply another coat of emulsion

Thanks both, never heard of applying gloss, so will try that first as it is behind the washer.

The gloss/emulsion trick worked for me when a black stain appeared on the ceiling over my shower cubicle, several months ago.

Try mixing oil based gloss and undercoat together 50/50 for the stain, then emulsion. The 2 together will help the emulsion to adhere better. Give it a first coat of emulsion then allow plenty of time for it to dry as with it going on oilbased paint it will take longer.
