Shed Roof

Whoever erected the shed I inherited put the long side right next to a high fence with a steep slope on the other side of the fence. The shed is sound but the roof leaks badly. I think the best way to tackle this will be to take off the roof to put on new felt. Will this be a solution and possible? Can you predict any problems?

......... er ........ Nessy, what is the significance of the fence and the slope on the other side?

The shed is about two inches from the fence. The fence is a bit high for me to climb over. To walk round would take ages and I would have to put the ladder on a steep downward slope. I just can`t get to the far side of the roof. I would have erected the shed with access to the whole roof for future repairs but this was the guy who left me with the exploding light and other surprises when I bought the house.
How big is the shed, could you not mend it from one side?

Tenrec. The shed is about 8x5. The far side of the roof is below the top of the fence and almost touching. If I could lie across the roof...bum to neighbours.... I couldn`t secure the lower edge of the far side.
I guess I'd be inclined to fix a piecs of timber to the fence, horizontally a eaves height (that's the lowest part of your roof.)
Run the new felt down the roof and fix it onto the piece of timber. That way, you make the roof watertight, and also the unreachable gap between shed and fence............ since you can't get in there to paint it anyway. It'll help protect that side of the shed.
^^^ piece of timber horizontally at eaves height ^^
Sorry about the typing :o(

Thank you Builder. Forgot to say the back of the fence is next to a fence too but that can be accessed from next door`s garden. Have done as you suggested in my mind and I think I can do that. As you say it will also protect the side I can`t get to. Many thanks.
You could always remove all contents from the shed. Then with the help of an accomplice slide the shed away from the fence so you can get behind it. Many people put their sheds close to fences just to gain a foot or two of garden

I would love to do that pdq1 but my garden slopes down steeply to the bottom of the shed. When I have a new shed I will dig out and do that.I think you are right about why the shed is where it is but god knows why as nothing was done to the garden other than grass.
