We are as having some building work done which will involve relocating both gas and electric meters. Does anyone know who has to do this work, the national grid website is not at all helpful. I know that they are very expensive for this work and wondered if corgi registered (for gas) are able to do this work. Similarly for the electric meter, can any properly qualified electrician do this

used to be the gas or electric board they get v unhappy if you look at the meter in the wrong way so I expect it will still be them and they will charge a fine fee for it too- sorry
Contact Eon or Central Networks for the electric meter,a registered electrician if you need to move your distribution board and On Stream for the gas meter. Its going to cost you and give them plenty of notice because their cogs turn a lot slower than the ones in the meters !!!
Electric meters have a security tag on them and Is only aloud to be broken by the actual electric board who you are paying for your electric. If the tag is broken by anyone else You could get in trouble for tampering with mains electric. My dad used to work as a meter fitter for Norweb and when he read or went to service a meter and found a tag/seal been cut in any way he would have to report it.
Any Utility Infrastructure Provider can make the changes to your gas meter.

General information, from National Grid, about moving your gas meter is here (together with relevant links):

Information about getting a quote from other UIPs is here:

It should be noted that National Grid have sold off parts of the gas distribution network. Depending upon your location you might now be within the areas of one of these companies:
Wales & West Utilities

Scotia Gas Networks

Northern Gas Networks:

There are seven different groups controlling electricity distribution in the UK. You can find the correct one for your area by checking the links in the panel on the right of this page (but the information should be somewhere on your electricity bill anyway!):

It looks pretty complicated. Should get on to to them soon, the plans are in and take about 8 weeks, probably not a good idea to wait until the plans are passed (hopefully), then start getting onto somebody for moving the meters.

Thanks for the information, who would have thought it would be so complicated, it would appear that national grid can do the whole job for the gas meter at a cost of £1100!!!! You can arrange for some of the work to be done yourself but they charge £400 just to disconnect the supply and lay a new pipe and that doesnt include any digging. Outrageous. The electric meter apparently has to have the power cable done by the local electricity company but the meter itself by the supplier - totally ridiculous the whole thing.
