New front door. Secure?

Old wooden front door finally giving up the ghost. Well, it's been on there since the 1930s, so about due.

Anyway, we're going to splash out on a 'decent' plastic/glass one, but wondered about security. The posher ones have laminated glass, which apparently is a bit of a deterrent to criminals, but we're also concerned about having the door kicked in.

Are any specifications better than any others? Do some doors have steel frames, particularly across the lower panels, to stop them being kicked in?

'Which?' says to go to an independent rather than, say, an Everest-type company. 'Yale Doors' have a good web site (no link with the locks as far as I can see).

Any ideas on the subject most welcomed.

Allen.

Definitely independant, Everest , safestyle etc will rip you of.

North-west London, Mick. Not exactly a routine occurence, but it does seem an easy way to gain entry.

A.
most double glazd doors are fairly strong allen go for a good company ,but just make sure its internally glazed because some doors have the beads on the outside still and you can pop em out and take glass out from outside ,easy for a burgular!
If you are really worried about security, allen
take a look at composite doors.
no they can not , climbingtiger ....the glass can not be removed from the outside. It is secured with tremco a very stickey double sided adhesive tape.
The glass will break before the tape will give way.
oops .. stray e there :0/
well tha must be new mick cause the firm i worked for 15 yrs for just popped em in from the outside .
very strange.

how long ago was this ?

Would it be incriminating to ask what you did for a living, climbingtiger?

been in the building trade 25yrs allen but like mick said diff companies do vary, most companies internally glaze these days ,was just recommending you ask company first ,because possibly some inferior companies may still do this.
in fact allen i will rephrase that as to say it is not nessecarily inferior companies ,but am only saying internally glazed is the better way,as u cannot pop the beads out from inside.
sorry meant the outside!
I thought it was impossible to get externally glazed units these days!

My doors are composite and multi lock. One keyhole but several locking points to the side, top and bottom. They are far more secure than any other door I've had.
I bought mine from a small independent. Have them a few years and still thrilled with them.
yer think you are rite mate, thats why i said to allen to double check before he buys ,but like you said i dont think anybody uses them any more .
