I need a new kettle, I have had several of the jug kind and they don't last very long, I am at present using my 'old faithful' that's been in the family for about 30yrs, an old Swan, but the long lead gets in the way, so I want one with a large element that sits on a base, I think its the small elements in the jug type that burns out quickly, so what is a good make to for please?

Anything other than DeLonghi, expensive but a waste of money. From Personal experience.
You may find this Which? link helpful:

http://www.which.co.uk/home-and-garden/kitchen/reviews/kettles/page/reliability/

As a member, I can tell you that in the reliability table, the most reliable brands are:

Dualit, Kenwood, Bosch, M&S, De Longhi, Philips,Russell Hobbs and John Lewis
We've had an Alessi Hob Kettle for years and it still looks good as new. It doesn't use this new fangled electricity though.........just sits on the gas ring.
Trouble with gas "hob" kettles is that they are very inefficient - an expensive way of boiling water.

The trouble with that Independent piece is that it is "lifestyle"-based and not based on reliability data..as the Which? report is. Which is what the OP wanted.
Modern kettles are rubbish - buy a cheapie and regard them as expendable. Really, what's £5.99 compared to teas/coffees from the dreaded chain coffee shops?!
If you're going to spend a whole six pounds on an electric kettle...then, yes, you are going to get "rubbish".
