how about clear carpet protector ? can't think of any way to treat the tiles

What is more important, your nice ceramic floor or your old dog?? In my case it would be the dog and for the rest of her time on this earth I would want her to be comfortable, so carpet all over is the only answer for me. You can remove it when she's gone, can't you ?

thanks marden thats very helpful, and new to me, I will give it a try, all over carpet is an expense I can't afford really and any more bits of matting laying about would be a danger, the dogs not the only 'oldie' in the house, and the carpet protector is also slippery.

try and get hold of some old rugs or something maybe and put them at intermittent spaces - thats what i did with my GSD when she could no longer stand up on the laminate flooring. Horrible to see them suffer like that and you have my full sympathies - you're doing the right thing and don't deserve chaptazbru's comments x

thanks nini, I have just ordered some of the wax that marden connected me to, sounds good, hope it is, only time will tell, at the moment the old dog(16 next week) is able to lay outside in the shade so that helps, also eases the joints.

for anyone with the same problem I have had the most simple solution given me, from a floor salesman, ceramic flooring gets a slippery shine to it after years of use, simply scrub the tiles with hot water a stiff brush and some abrasive cream cleaner ( cif or jif ) and the floor will be safe for your dog to walk on again, and it won't hurt the tiles, it needs doing each week, I did it and it works, I will try the paw wax when it arrives and let you know if it also works.

Blimey cecil, that sounds like really hard work! I'm glad it worked though.

The same thing happened to my dog, since I needed a renovation anyway and also hate carpets due to hayfever, I decided to put in wooden decking. My dog has no problem now. Have a look at the website here: http://www.envirodeck.co.za

We had the same problem with an older dog who couldnt enough grip on a wooden floor to get up, the only solutions are carpet runners in the most used areas, or non slip dog socks. By the way Paw wax is for the dogs paws, and not the floor, talcum powder on the dogs paws also helps, but I dont think it will give enough traction for an elderly dog.

I have just been told on 'pets' that the wax should go on the dogs paws, jules but thats not what it says on the tin, it should give a nonslip finnish for dogs to walk on, but to put it on the dogs paws to protect from salt in winter and tar in summer, I would like to hear from someone else who has tried it. i'm sure someone must have.
