Cooker Hoods

I'm looking to relace my faithful, old ,freestanding Gas cooker with eye-level Grill for a modern Gas Cooker preferably with a timer .Do I need to get a cooker hood? It's 20 years since I last bought a cooker so I don't know what I'm looking for or indeed talking about!!!any advice please.
One site talked about Continental ovens, hotter at the bottom, is that possible,I thought heat rose upwards.

I have a cooker hood. In five years I have used it maybe once or twice and only then for the fact it has a light in it!
its not a necessity to have a cooker hood.......you would need to get power to the high level if its not already there then you would need a 4 inch hole through the external wall to vent, you can use charcoal filters without the need to vent but they are useless....if you have gone all this time without one I wouldn't bother to be honest.......
cooker hoods are great at catching dust on top & grease from the hob & storing the odd baking tray on it, without the dust.
save your money.
With a fan oven, the temperature will be the same in any part of the oven. With a gas oven and no fan, the temperature will be hottest at the top. With an electric oven with no fan, it depends on the placing of the heating elements. It's possible for side-mounted elements to radiate heat in such a way that the centre of the oven is the hottest part. In the same way, bottom-mounted elements may radiate to make the bottom hottest. Note that with these radiant heats the air in the oven will still be hottest at the top
What happened to eye level grills, much easier to see and use plus they gives more oven space!
