I have recently bought several bags of compost to use in a raised vegetable plot. However on opening them I find there is a grey deposit similar to mould. Is this normal and is it okay to use.

If it doesn't smell sour, it'll be fine. it's just natural mouldy spores that have grow in the dark/damp bag.

I suspect they've been allowed to get damp ... Empty out the bags, allow it to dry out, the mould will most likely disappear.

Does it smell 'sour'?

No it doesn't smell sour, so thanks, I will empty it out and hopefully we will have some more nice sunny days to dry it.
