my lawn has a big gap in it where we had a rock garden. I want to turf this area. I need to know what the depth should be from the top of the existing lawn to the ground on which I will be laying the new turves so that the existing lawn and the new turves will be level after laying the new turves. Will the new turves settle or ,if I prepare properly , will there be no discernible settlement. Mike Biagioni

I laid a new lawn a month ago and I have to say it appears to have 'dropped' very minimally, if at all. Sorry that's not much help. If anything I'd err towards being a little high because you can always flatten it with a roller but will be stumped if it is too low.
I agree with Philtaz, if anything it will tend to drop so make it slightly higher. You can bring the level up but it is a lot more fiddly. Make sure it is consolidated thoroughly and you shouldn't have too many problems
