harvesting lettuce leaves

I am growing some "cut and come again" salad leaves.
It says to pick the outer leaves regularly to encourage regrowth.
Thing is, i don't know how! Do i just pull the whole leaf off, or cut it at the base with a knife?
It's probably obvious to someone who knows!

you can use a knife and cut as low down as possible but making sure you do not cut into the main body of the lettuce. Alternatively you can hold the leaf as low down as possible and pull and twist sidewyas to remove it. What you are looking for is a clean cust so as not to leave much room for infection or rotting.

It is the same principal as removing lettuce leaves from a whole lettuce you may buy in the suppermarket.

I grow these every year, in a window box, and use scissors to cut it, and as Hawkwalk says, cut as low as possible.

thank you for that.
I needed the leaves before I got the reply and had a go anyway.
Today, one of them looks like it's dying! I knew I'd kill 'em!

oh yeah, meant to also ask: will the leaf I've cut grow up again, or will a new one grow in its place?
