Cut - or left alone?

My garden is full of lily of the valley and what I think are Solomon Seal. Well. threads of the latter,as the slugs have been chomping their way through them.

Now, what I can't find in gardening books is what do do with them now. Do I leave them as they are or cut them back to ground level? Thank you for any help.

Hi Cetti
The lily of the valley I always leave until it dies down.
The Solomon's seal may have sawfly larvae eating them. Turn the leaves over & they'll be there - horrid grey caterpillar type creatures and, unless you'd care to pick them all off & 'dispose' of them (ugh!), you may as well cut your leaves down to the ground as they will strip them anyway.
Gardening isn't always a joy I'm afraid! :o)

Thanks, Robinia. Sawfly sound really nice, I must inspect closely with my looking glass!
Honestly, the bugs and crawly things we have found this year in the garden .. and had on our person (ugh!) most of them we've never encountered before. Tis indeed a joy.

PS. Apologies for the late reply, but I didn't get an AB email :-(
