Any suggestions as to how to ensure my sole tomato plant won't dry out while left in a cool room for two weeks, (without having to buy anything expensive!)

I've never done this but I keep seeing it -

Get a plastic bottle with the lid on, chop the bottom off, prick a few small holes and place upside down in the soil by the plant, fill with water. If the holes are not too big then the water will very gradually leech out. Not sure it'd last 2 weeks though.

Plant it in the garden if you can, failing that stand it in the bath or shower next to a bucket of water. Place a length of cotton string or thin rag in the bucket so that it reaches the bottom and place the other end on the soil in the pot. Water will travel by capillary action from the bucket to the pot. Adjust heights and thickness or string/rag to get the right drip rate.

Thanks for suggestions ,I'm experimenting with both at the moment, even though I made holes in bottle small it's run out so will try again, I'd heard of the string and water one before, couldn't remember how it was done, but am trying that too, will keep you informed.
Put it in the bath under dripping tap
Just put in in a buket with a inch or so of water
If you use the dripping tap method start it a day early as the flow may stop when the tap washer relaxes.
I've used the method suggested in jomifl's first answer, using woolen thread to slowly wick the water to the plant.

The wick method trial working well, very difficult to get holes right in drip thru method. Thanks for all the input.(maybe ,knowing our vague weather it will be fine to leave it outside and rely on family to 'plant sit ')
