Tomatoes

I have 4 tomato plants in my back garden (3 in a grow bag and 1 in a pot) and we're off for 4 days and don't want to bother the neighbours with watering them. My eldest daughter says she read somewhere that if you use a lemonade or squash bottle upturned (with the bottom cut off) in the pot or bag then fill with water, it will drain gradually so the tomatoes will be alright while we're away. So what do ABers think please?

Sounds like it would work, a small hole I think. You could also use a bucket of water at a higher level than the soil with a piece of wet string between the two, the string will wick water to the toms.

You think a small hole in the lid of the uptuned bottle would be ok? the water would trickle out then perhaps?
I'd go with the bottle idea - sounds fine for 4 days.

I did the same when I went away and it worked a treat. Just don't make the hole too small otherwise the soil blocks it and it takes ages to drip through.

Thank you, Maidup, I'll give it a go.
