Ramblers can be very vigorous some climbers too and hedging can be fine you let me know what you want colour/location/ use I can probably suggest varieties... fragrance type would be useful too

Has to be planted at the 'east' side of a north/south fence to help with security deterrent eg persons climbing the fence....If possible, something that could be effective this season -other factors are secondary....
I would use Rosa pterocantha then huge thorns that look great even in winter combined with Rosa Glauca both small flowered wild types grow fairly vigorously but good for security..

Glauca is sometimes described as slightly thorny I had one and it was a nightmare to tidy up I had the scratches to prove it so ignore the 'slightly it's a lie'

Also all the rugosas are thorny barstewards and flower well too
We have a climbing rose "Seagull" all up the back of our house and along the back wall - it's extremely determined and grows a good six feet extra every year - probably more actually. It smells wonderful.
Thanks everyone, this question has helped me too. I love things that smell nice and need something to cover a hole fairly quickly. Thanks also to Matheous for asking the question.
Starbuckone... Guinee deepest burgundy red climber forms long stems and smells like heaven good fr cutting too The thornless rose zepherine Drouhin is still probably one of the best forfragrance and is a good repeat flowerer
Thanks rowan. I'm making a note of all these names.
