onions

i have put onion sets into trays of soil, they are growing well. was going to transplant into an outside bed ( as a TV gardener said we should) but all the bulbs are soft and sqidgy. is this normal, or should I dump them and plant new ones straight outside. Also, tomato's in the green house in pots seem very slow and look a bit reluctant to open their leaves. they are about 5" high. anyone else got this problem?
Thanks,
Percy

I planted some onion sets 3 weeks ago outside they are starting to sprout green. Only problem was cats digging the soft earth so had to cover with a net.
Good luck.
by the way have planted out in March for many years.Still eating last years ' crop now.
If they are squidgy then it sounds as if they have rotted off?
They shouldn't be squidgy or rely soft. They tend to keep there more harder feel to them as when you first bought your onion sets. All I do is place them lightly into the soil about half the bulb under half showing and leave them, They soon root and then start to show a green shoot from the top. Then after summer, early winter they are 3 or 4 times the size and ready to pull back out. very simple and not much to do for them, just dont let the soil get too dry over hot summers for long periods.
A bit too cold for tomatoes just yet. They will get going when it warms up a bit.
