I need to dig a 30ft trench 1ft wide x 2ft deep across a long-established garden lawn.

Is there a small mechanical digger that would do the job without having to use a pick ? The digger must be small enough to get through a small garage.

Cheers.

You can hire a mini excavator through Jewson's:
http://www.jewson.co.uk/tool-hire/earth-moving/excavators/products/6702/mini-excavator/

HSS has both mini and micro models available:

Many other (more local) companies offer them too.

The main problem with getting through a garage though might be the height. However although the HSS Micro model (for example) is 2.23m high when working, the rollover bars fold down for access purposes, so that it should fit under most garage doors. 30ft trench 1ft wide x 2ft deep isn't much of a trench ... don't you know anyone willing to dig it without going to the trouble oh hiring a excavator?
^^^ A jobbing gardener who's got a rotavator (to break up the hard top surface of the soil, making the digging part much easier) might be able to do it for a reasonable price

. . . but perhaps Derek just wants to play with a big boy's toy anyway?
