I had a damp corner in my kitchen and despite having three different builders out none could say what caused it or provide a permanent solution but was advised that maybe having it lined with a type of damp proof polystyrene lining.
This I had done and it is good now,
However, someone said to me that had I not had expensive wallpaper and opted for cheap,it would not have happened....now,this,to me,sounds absolutely ridiculous...what do you all think????

It may be good your side, but what of the brick wall behind it ?
No leaking pipes above ? Was it penetrating from outside ? Or is the cat banned from the kitchen now ? No idea what effect a fancy wallpaper would have to cause a problem. Someone should clarify what it is that they mean.
It sounds to me that you had a simple problem with condensation, Kloof.

Without knowing the exact wall construction, it's impossible to say for sure, but citing the type of wallpaper used seems ridiculous. You have added a fairly minimal layer of insulation to a cold surface. Perhaps that's all that was needed.
When I bought my first house it had many rooms with a polystyrene layer under the wallpaper. Blooming awful. Forever bumping into it with something and leaving a dent/gash/mark. Had to go.
