Gas Fire Isolating

I am thinking of replacing our lounge gas fire with an electric. I was told that I would have to have the gas properly isolated rather than just leave the gas workings in the off position, with the free-standing elec. in front of it.Please advise.

Yes, you need the gas outlet blocked off with a metal plug.

Sounds a reasonable safety measure to have the pipe capped off properly.

Wish I hadn't asked----my local gas/elec. showroom quoted £80 and the shop where I am getting my replacement elec. fire quoted £60!!!--Thanks anyway to you all.

The parts to cap off the pipe cost £2 from B&Q or any DIY store, it takes 2 mins but you are supposed to get a registered gas fitter to do it!
Personally I would do it myself as it's so easy.
