The heat is going out, straight through the roof, because there is nothing to stop it.

Wow!!! That was quick, even with the attic floor boarded??
Attic boarding isn't good enough. You need a few inches of insulating material on top of the boards.
......or under them.
Yes, under the boards is better, because then you can at least walk about in the loft.
Apparently, you need a recommended 270mm of insulation.

I am agog that you have no insulation!!! Do you really mean you have one?
^^^ none not one!
Eccles, there are still lots of dwellings in the UK which in other countries would be deemed unfit for habitation, by the market if not officially.
We had our loft insulated, and cavity wall insulation, done for free a couple of years ago. It's made a HUGE difference to the heat in the house. Might be worth looking into any schemes available in your area.
We already had loft insulation but the extra foot they put in really has made a difference.
I am amazed as well!! Your heating bills must be sky high, literally.
Is the loft converted into a room - does it have stairs leading up to it; or is access via a ladder??
Our loft was already converted before we moved in and both the floor and the ceiling of the loft are insulated.

0.27 meters of insulation is not going to fit between bedroom ceiling and attic floorboards. Does it still count if you crush in down to rafter height ? No one wants to lower their ceiling.

Maybe if we filled our attics with polystyrene balls ?
OG,
if you crush insulation down to fit you defeat the object of the insulation. It is the air trapped in the layer of the material that insulates not the material itself.

Thank you all for your replies. It's now obvious that insulation is the answer to my problem. But I boarded my attic floors years ago and have now used it as a store for everything "till later".I dread having to move it all now.
