I would like to paint some MDF with black gloss paint. Do I need an undercoat and if so, what type and colour? TIA

I still think that your best option is to properly prime the MDF

and possibly then to try a one-coat gloss. (Although two coats of conventional gloss might still be better).

Having painted MDF when I made mt grandson a toy box, I used MDF primer, then a couple of undercoats, finishing with gloss. Tried painting other MDF since without primer - it's like trying to paint a sponge !!
Hope this helps

Thank you both. I read the reviews Buen, one good and the bad one was painting over gloss(not something I would do without a primer). If I use a primer, what colour should I use?
As far as I know, you don't get a choice of colour with specialist MDF primer. It all seems to be white.

Since posting yesterday I've remembered trying to paint directly onto MDF, many years ago, when helping out with stage props. As Fbg40 indicates, the paint doesn't so much go ONTO the MDF as INTO it!
