I am thinking of having some building work done by a friend, who will be charging me £120 per day (8 to 5) plus I buy all the materials (patio and wall). Is that the going rate - does any one know.

That sounds reasonable.
The only problem with paying a day rate, instead of a price for the whole job, is will they drag it out to get more money .... that's my take on it anyway.
I'd say £120 per day is a decent rate .... just so long as they don't drag it out :)
Or they don't keep disappearing for a few hours here and there.
Can you get an estimate as to how many days it will take?
I think the problem with employing a friend to do anything is how you handle when things go wrong. If you have got a professional only relationship with the workman, then you can still be polite of course but clear about what the problem is and how you want it resolved.....much harder with a mate.
£120 for eight hours is £15 per hour, you would generally be very lucky to get anyone for that rate.
I agree with Woof. I wouldn't get a mate in either.

Do you mean £15 per hour is not much money Karl ?
It's not for a trades man.
