Has anyone got a definitive strategy for tackling this tricky problem?

I'd suggest the same as unpainted. Score/pierce, steam, scrape.

Thanks OG - I was just hoping that there maybe some kind of chemical that had been invented since I last did it that would make it all disappear with little or no elbow grease
I guess I'll have to wait for that to happen
Whenever possible I score the paper then put on a fairly warm mix of water and washing up liquid, do that couple of times then it usually comes off. The washing up liquid makes it stick to the paper so has more time to soften it and not run straight down. I find a steamer can be quite messy at times but will use one if needs must. I always put some paper down first then it is just a case of rolling it up at the end and all the mess is gone in one go.
