On Win 10 trying to edit a piccie, that is stored on my C drive, with paint. When I go to close the piccie, I usually get a message along the lines of "do you want to save the changes .... etc" .... to which I'd press yes and the piccie would be saved with the changes.

However, I've just encountered the following error:

"A sharing violation occurred while accessing C:\users\desktop ....... jpg" and it won't let me close and save the piccie.

Any ideas please ??

It sounds like the picture is being used by another program already so it wont let you change it, is it your desktop image for example?

Copy the photo (not MOVE but COPY) into another folder, like MyPictures or similar. Give it a new name perhaps so you know you are working with the new copy.

Then edit the COPY you have made (not the original) and it should let you save that.
That message means that you're trying to re-ave a file that's still be used by another program.

Before you start shouting that you're not using another program at the same time, please remember that Windows Explorer and Windows Picture Viewer (or what whatever Windows 10 now calls them) are also 'programs' in their own right.

So if, for example, you called up a thumbnail of the image and then opened the full image from there in Paint, you can't re-save the image file until you've closed whatever other program was displaying the image (or a thumbnail of it), such as Windows Picture Viewer.

Sorted now - many thanks.
Good.
In those circumstances "save as" stops it being a panic situation.
(IMO a decent OS wouldn't lock a file for a viewer, and/or would simply warn and request save confirmation. It'd take care of the issues. )
